Image Isn’t Everything

September 6, 2011/in Leadership Steve Singletary Blog /by Steve Singletary

We live in a world that is obsessed with image. We buy clothes, houses, cars and personal license plates that reflect an image. We vacation at certain places, name drop people, events and accomplishments and want to know how we are doing compared to others. Facebook and the social media has helped us with this. It is important to us that we look a certain way and that we are perceived in a certain way. We will go to some lengths to accomplish this goal. “So what’s the big deal?” you may ask. Isn’t image everything? No, it isn’t…but it is something. We all project an image, even those who strive to not project an image. They are the “I want to come across as if I don’t care much about my image” people. We can’t escape it and maybe we shouldn’t really try. Perhaps we would be better off accepting that image isn’t everything… but it is something. We all do project an image and the closer that image is to our reality, the better. We call this being authentic.

Recently The Center has reflected on our image. We desire to project a consistent message in everything we do and say. You will notice that we have a new logo and “tag line”. We have purposely rebranded ourselves to express this message. The logo is based on the Scripture from Psalms 1:1-3.

Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.

The oak tree and stream in our logo reflect these verses as does the tag line; “Getting men into the Word…and the Word into the world”. You will see this theme on everything from the new website to our new stationery because we believe that God’s Word is the power which transforms a person’s life. We want God’s Word to be central in all that we undertake at The Center. From the large group breakfast meetings to the one-on-one studies, from the couple counseling, to the business coaching, from the small group studies to the leadership training, we are striving to be “Getting men into the Word …and the Word into the world”.

Content is most important, and the most important content is the Word. That is why I say “Image isn’t everything…but it is something”.
