Living is hard work.
Doesn’t it seem that sometimes just getting the essential tasks done is overwhelming? Most of us have known the experience of feeling overwhelmed with responsibility at work and at home. Income production, relationships, obligations, unexpected and unwanted circumstances are all things that crowd in and make demands on our time and attention.
Jesus had something to say about that. Matthew 11: 28 – 30 records him saying “Come to me all you who labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
When I read this passage the other day, I noticed that Jesus doesn’t say that the “rest” we seek comes by ceasing to labor and putting down our burden. He says it comes to us by taking upon ourselves his yoke, and learning from him “for”, he says, “I am gentle and lowly in heart”.
What is this yoke to which he refers, and why does his gentleness and lowly heart translate into rest for my soul? What is the yoke of Jesus? It is Jesus himself. His life, his righteousness, his reward. It is trusting and believing in him.
In John 6: 29 Jesus says “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.”
So there it is. Jesus offers rest to our weary souls, all we have to do to receive it is believe in him and trust him. He is gentle and lowly in heart. He will not force his rest upon us. He waits for us to come to him and, in an act of demonstrable humility, ask him for that which we cannot produce for ourselves.
Is your life hard? Is your load heavy?
Come to Jesus and ask for his rest, believe, and LIVE!
